It was a little shop just off Lambton Quay in Wellington, New Zealand. One of those shops that has all sorts of lovely dresses in the windows and one can daydream about the events they would be worn out.
We were fresh from the orchards, 6 weeks of apple thinning, cherry picking, and fruit selling. Tanned and sporting several new callouses. We walked through the doors of the boutique and engaged at once in conversation with the store owner.
Yes, we were looking for something specific. Something simple, pretty and somewhat practical. It had to be okay to travel in a backpack.
She brought a black dress over. I tried it on.
It was perfect.
I tried it on with heels.
It was lovely.
And I felt beautiful.
We bought it.
I wore it for a photo shoot just a few days after a new haircut and make up.
I wore it to the Sydney Opera House where we stepped out and felt the harbor mist kiss our cheeks during intermission.
It’s been worn for more photo shoots, more events, more dinners out and date nights then anything else I own. I’ve worn it four months pregnant and eight months post partum. I’ve worn it for almost every Valentine’s dinner whether we go out or stay in, rocking the baby in between chocolate fondue.
Every time I slip it on, I feel beautiful. And I remember that little shop just off Lambton Quay in Wellington, New Zealand. And I remember how he always makes me feel like a princess, even when I’m a sunburned cherry picker or a tired new mum or a girl just out with her guy.
It’s cost per wear is now a few dollars. I know it always looks fabulous on me and I can accessorize it several different ways. It’s one of the key pieces in my wardrobe. Every woman should have a version of the little black dress. It may cost a little more then the trendy piece but buying a classic piece that can be worn multiple times in multiple settings, be stuffed in a backpack and still be in perfect condition is always a good buy.
Do you have a go-to dress or outfit? What’s your favourite piece you reach for an event?
