About once a week or so, I slip out the back door and head to a favourite coffee shop. I order something hot, open the laptop and work. It’s the middle of the afternoon and the girls are quiet while their Daddy practices in the front room. The sound of the violin has been their lullaby for as long as they both can remember.
The work varies from time to time – writing a long email to a faraway friend, editing photos for a blog post or other projects, researching something (there’s always something to be explored) or most often, I sip a latte and write a blog post. It’s one of my favourite ways to have introvert time.
Other times, I’ll slip out and just run errands. By myself.
Some times, I don’t do anything but sit and watch people and make up stories about them in my head.
I love these quiet times. I look forward to going out and I always look forward to coming back after the quiet to my girls who hug my knees as if I’ve been gone for days.
It’s a chance for me to remember how to interact at a coffee shop without also managing two energetic children. It’s a chance for me to get some quiet time alone so that I can be more mindful of my greater work as a mother. It’s a chance for me to drink a latte while it’s still hard and savour it.
And it is always so refreshing.
